Week of October 13th, 2025
At RLS, our mission, is to ensure that all students learn at grade level or higher
NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY, OCTOBER 13!

Families of 8th grade students, I'll be meeting with all 8th grade students on Tuesday at lunch to review both Yosemite attendance criteria AND promotion criteria.
Your student will have 2 documents that need to be reviewed by you, signed, and returned.
To be clear-this is not a permission slip. It's simply the rules to participate in both events. Can you believe we are already talking about this!  Exciting stuff!

Later this year, we will send out permission slips, packing lists, and schedule a parent information night. Please know, the cost to the district for each 8th grade student to attend Yosemite is over $1000. Last year, the day we left, 7 students dropped out, which cost the district dearly. It wasn't long ago that there was a parent/family contribution to attend. We are so incredibly grateful that the SHUSD Board of Trustees values this learning experience so much that they allocate and approve funds every year for it now, in entirety.

Please, if you have concerns with Yosemite or questions, reach out early We will provide you with a good deal of information and we know sending your student away for a few nights can be worrisome. Please just ask for clarification, it's a great, safe time!
This year, Yosemite is May 26-29.

The Great California Shakeout-
Families, this Thursday, October 16th @ 10:30 we will be participating in the Great California Shakeout drill.
We'll be sharing information with students and teachers this week. This is both an annual drill run across California in memory of the lessons learned from the Loma Prieta earthquake on October 17th, 1989 and qualifies as our monthly safety response drill.
All Families-
If you have a planned absence that is more than 4 and less than 20 days, let Lorena know and your student can receive the Short Term Independent Study paperwork. Thank you!

While we don't condone or recommend missing extended periods of time and prefer families vacation at the regularly scheduled intervals as provided by the district's master calendar and published on the website, we understand things come up and want students to be able to remain in good standing.

Parents and guardians, please help us in assisting our students remain warm, safe, and dry while also maintaining an effective teaching and learning environment. As the weather shifts to cooler, possibly rainy days, please ensure students have rain jackets, appropriate shoes/boots (not slippers), hoodies, etc.
Students, however, may not bring blankets to school as a source of warmth.  Thank you!

Please remind your student(s) that we do have Mr. Samuels as a crossing guard on the corner of Oak and Hillview every morning and after school every day.

Parents, exciting news! Learn more about our Phone-Free Childhood workshop series below!

October - ANALYZE

Our Word of the Month for October is analyze. This is a verb, an action. When we examine something in detail to figure out the structure of it, we are analyzing it.  We analyze historical events or primary source documents; we analyze themes in books we read or arguments and evidence in articles; we analyze our throw or our swing in various sports.  What will you analyze today?

Progress reports will be mailed home on Thursday, October 2nd.

The value winners for today are:

7th:      Maya Culkin

This moth is National Bullying Prevention month.  On Wednesday, October 8th, was National Stop Bullying Day. We brought awareness to this important day through an activity and lesson in Advisory.  October 22 is Unity Day, which is the day that people wear orange to show that we believe no child should ever experience bullying. This awareness flows directly in to Red Ribbon Week. RRW encourages schools and communities to support and educate students on the dangers of drugs and alcohol. We are planning a series of awareness activities in partnership with community organizations.

Last Week in Pictures

Hectic week and not many pictures!
I did however have the opportunity, as previously shared, to visit leadership and work with them on some feedback on areas for celebration and growth from the California Healthy Kids Survey and Kelvin Survey. We spent time working with Thinking Maps in small groups defining "Meaningful Participation" and "Engagement" in class and on campus. This coming week we will continue that work defining concreted actions I can take as a school leader and they can take as school leaders.

8th Grade Families-You do not need to purchase a yearbook for your 8th grade. If you'd like to donate a yearbook or purchase an Advertisement celebrating your student or students, please find that information below!
Thank you to Parent Group and The Saint Helena Public Schools Foundation for their support in donating a yearbook to every 8th grade student!

6th and 7th Grade Families, below is information on how to purchase a yearbook. This year, we are offering families the chance to donate a yearbook to a family who may have challenges making that purchase. Additionally, you can purchase an advertisement celebrating your student or students though the scan codes below.
