RLS Families- You know it's nearing the end of the school year when testing is coupled with all sorts of celebrations!
The time honored tradition of hosting our future Blue Devils is Tuesday, April 28 from 10:30-1:30! We look forward to meeting you and showing you around!
We'll also be hosting 5th grade parent orientation in the Big Gym plus a tour! 5-6 PM. Translation provided.
SHUSD will be celebrating all of it's students who reclassified as English Proficient from English Learner status on Thursday, 5:30-7 @ the PAC. Congratulations to our amazing families!
This week we begin the STAR benchmark in 6th and 7th grade Math and 6-8 ELA. Please help us ensuring your student has a great night sleep, breakfast, and brings a fully charged chromebook to school. This Monday marks the beginning of our testing season as the following week we begin the California standardized assessment called the CAASPP in ELA and Math.
We also have ELAC on Monday, 4:30-5:30 in Mr. Ryan's office where we will review our school goals for the next school year. School Site Council meets on Tuesday at 7:15 to review next year's goals in Mr. Ryan's office.
I wanted to ask for your assistance with a new situation on campus. We have had a few students, mainly boys, bring a deck of cards to school and engage in some friendly games of chance, i.e. Poker. Games of chance, like Poker, are not allowed on school campuses. I'll address it with the students here but, if it comes up or you see a deck of cards with your student on the way to school, "call" it out.
Additionally, we have some talented students making things on their personal time and attempting to sell them on campus. While we appreciate a student's active engagement in a healthy hobby and skill, selling items on campus for personal gain is not allowed. Thank you! Repeated but important: 8th grade families, as we near the end of the year, I'll be speaking with 8th grade students to remind them of end-of-the-year timelines, behavior, and Yosemite reminders. As you continue to put together your students list of items for Yosemite, remember if you don't have something, we can assist in getting it for you. There is no need to buy new items or decline to go because you don't have them. Any 8th grade student who is suspended for an infraction that occurred on or after May 1 will not be able to attend the promotion party after the promotion ceremony.
Thank you!
CAASPP Testing Update-
- Parents-as you may recall, students in grades 3-8 and 11 take an annual standardized test called the Smarter Balanced Assessment in ELA and Math. Students in grade 8 also take a science test entitled the CAST.
- These assessments are not included in your students' grades. They do, however, help us as a school and district measure learning, evaluate programs, and allocate resources in an informed manner.
- We are required to share the information linked here (English) and here (Spanish) prior to standardized testing beginning.
- In addition, I want to share these resources (English Spanish) with you as they provide additional information about testing suggestions on how you can assist your student in preparing for the assessment, lowering anxiety, and understanding the exam itself.
